“The body is our first land, the place from which we experience the world.”
Andrea Olsen, Body and Earth: An Experiential Guide, 2002, ed: University Press of New England
Originally from the highlands of Réunion Island, Wendy Therméa draws deep inspiration from the wild and diverse natural landscapes that shaped her early life, mountains, volcano, and flowing rivers. This close relationship with her environment informs an artistic practice grounded in the body’s connection to the natural world.
Working primarily with video, her work is evolving toward installation and multisensory experiences that engage sight, sound, and smell, immersing the viewer in spaces of contemplation and presence.
Her creations, often rich in metaphor and lyrical in tone, reflect on the cycles of life and the rhythms of nature. She explores the human presence within the landscape and our connection to all living beings, raising questions about our place in, and responsibility toward, the natural world.
Wendy adopts an intuitive approach, using the body as a tool to investigate the dynamic interplay between humans and their surroundings. Anchored in her island roots, she expands her inquiry to address broader relationships between nature and culture, memory and territory.
Her practice intersects ecological awareness with poetic and political dimensions, engaging with themes that speak to shared global concerns.
